   what are your thoughts on residences putting some solar panels on their roof or in their yard if they have the space?

     Joe,

     I think putting solar panels on homes is the way to go.
     No need to build mega transmission lines. Hopefully your power company has net metering. That is when the power company buys back the excess power produced by the homeowners solar panels.
